Institute on Collaborative Language Research
The Institute on Collaborative Language Research, known as CoLang, is a biennial gathering for people to learn about language documentation, descriptive linguistics, and language revitalization.
The Institute emphasizes community-based approaches to language revitalization and collaboration at all stages of this work - from designing documentation or teaching projects to activism or archiving materials for future use.
CoLang aims to blur the lines between community and academia, learners and facilitators, and among areas of specialty. CoLang welcomes all people interested in community-based, collaborative language work.
Attending
CoLang takes place in even-numbered summers at various locations with participants and workshop facilitators drawn from around the world.
The first two weeks of the Institute consist of intensive workshops exploring topics in language documentation, descriptive linguistics, and revitalization, audio and video recording, language teaching, community archiving, and activism.
The workshops are followed by a choice of several two to four week practicum experiences where participants work intensively with speakers of a language to apply knowledge gained in the workshops.
Major funders
All CoLang Institutes have been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation Dynamic Language Infrastructure (NSF-DLI), formerly called Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL), in the Directorate of the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences.
All institutes have had a variety of funders and collaborators. Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring the Institute.
OTHER FUNDERS
The Linguistic Society of America provides financial underwriting for student fellowships to attend a CoLang Institute.
