Dictionaries are a wonderful way for a community to come together to document its own language and to pass that knowledge on to the next generation. This course focuses on the following aspects of dictionary making:

  • Dictionaries for different audiences (children’s dictionaries, online dictionaries, learner’s dictionaries, topical dictionaries, etc.).

  • Different models of doing dictionary work and developing a realistic time frame.

  • Issues that arise and that might threaten a dictionary project.

  • Different methods of gathering vocabulary.

  • Using software to make a dictionary.

  • Sources for further training and funding.

If possible, the class will apply these ideas by beginning a brief dictionary.
