Location: Preston Hall 207
Week 1: Monday, June 16-Thursday, June 19
Period 3: 2:15-3:45 pm

This four-day workshop, taught by a linguist and an ethnomusicologist, will introduce students to the cultural, linguistic and ethical aspects of the study of song. Special attention will be paid to the value of song transmission as a means to language retention, in communities undergoing language shift. Samples of our respective research approaches (the linguist's and the ethnomusicologist's) will be chosen from actual field material, illustrating at the same time how each complements the other, thus enriching the end result. Participants are encouraged to bring along some song samples of their own area of interest, so that class discussions are relevant to everyone.
