This course covers basic database design and the use of database management systems in the design of linguistic databases. Databases allow us to efficiently organize and analyse language data, as well as to do most of the work in creating and storing language resources such as dictionaries, annotated texts, and pedagogical materials. The course will discuss the relational model and how SQL is used to access data, as well as relational design principles based on dependencies and normal forms, and how these relate to logical design. Most importantly, it will show how good database design must:
Determine the relationships between the different data elements.
Superimpose a logical structure upon the data on the basis of these relationships.
It will cover the basic steps of the database design process, and show how a database design can be encapsulated in an ER (Entity-relationship model) diagram. Indexes, views, and integrity constraints will also be covered. Participants will be expected to apply these skills towards their own project during the class, using a database management system such as Filemaker, MySQL, or Access.
