In this workshop, we will address issues in community language archives that will cover the following areas:

  • What is an archive and what does an archivist do? (including best practices in creating and maintaining archives).

  • How to do archival research and how to use archival materials to revitalize endangered or dormant languages (including different types and functions of archives, navigating online catalogs and archives, using online digital archives).

  • What kinds of language materials should be archived? (including types of materials [physical vs born-digital], how to select and care for language materials).

  • Why, when, and how to donate language materials to an archive (including organization of materials and metadata, costs, policies of archives, the human element).

  • How to start your own community archive (physical vs. virtual, partnering with a larger archive, necessary resources, e.g. human, physical, technological, fiscal).
